“Emotion” was the second music video and also the title track of
Barbra's 1984 pop album.
The music video for “Emotion” showcased Streisand's humorous side. Barbra wore glamorous makeup, and very ‘80s clothing. She also sang opposite her co-stars Roger Daltrey and Mikhail Baryshnikov.
The music video was filmed October 1984 in London and featured Streisand-inspired art direction (the interiors of the glamorous house color-coordinated with Barbra's clothes!)
Even the director of Barbra's 2000 concert tour, Timeless, made a cameo appearance — Kenny Ortega appears as the window washer.
The nightclub scene at the end of the video featured British club personalities Philip Salon, Scarlett, and Tasty Tim.
“Emotion” premiered on MTV January 18, 1985.
In June 1985, Streisand's video was one of several acquired by Music Motions, a company run by former execs from MTV. Music Motions put music videos shot in 35-millimeter into movie theaters to promote the albums and boost sales. Local contemporary radio stations would mention the clips (called “Zaps”) on air, and Music Motions also circulated posters, stills, and other promotional material to the movie theaters.
Streisand’s video appeared on only 132 screens in the U.S. in Dolby stereo.
Columbia Records also produced a short feature called The Making of Barbra Streisand’s Emotion, featuring behind-the-scenes footage.
