“Sam, You Made the Pants Too Long” was actually a parody of a 1932 song “Lawd, You Made the Night Too Long.” The songwriters of that tune are credited for “Sam,” but uncredited is comedian Milton Berle, who wrote the parody lyrics for “Sam.”
Barbra made one change to Milton Berle's lyrics:
I feel a winter breeze up and down my knees,
My fly is where my tie belongs,
'Cause Sam, you made the pants too long!
Barbra replaced the “fly” bit with:
My belt is where the tie belongs.
It should be noted that Barbra's single of “Sam” was not included on the album Color Me Barbra. On that album, Barbra sings another version of “Sam” during the track titled “Medley.”
The single version of “Sam, You Made the Pants Too Long” was finally included on the 1970 album Barbra Streisand's Greatest Hits.
“The Minute Waltz” was based on the musical piece by Chopin. Streisand sang this comedy song on her television show, Color Me Barbra. Comic Rip Taylor actually sued Columbia Records, CBS TV, and Streisand over the material. Taylor alleged that he bought the song exclusively from writer Lan O'Kun and Streisand used it despite the agreement.
