In mid-November 1962, Columbia released Barbra's version of the Kander & Ebb song “My Coloring Book.” The b-side of that single was “Lover, Come Back to Me,” recorded back on October 16th.
“Coloring Book” was arranged and conducted by Bob Mersey. “It was a rush session,” said Bob Mersey. “We were doing an album with a group called the Arena Brass ... So we sneaked Barbra in on that session, for the one song, and I will never forget it.” Barbra did two takes and the session took forty-five minutes.
Kander and Ebb said they wrote “Coloring Book” for comedienne and cabaret star Kaye Ballard. But it was Sandy Stewart who ended up singing it on a Perry Como television show, and it became a big hit for her. George Chakiris (Bernardo in the
West Side Story film) also recorded it for Capitol Records; Kitty Kallen sang it, too. “We got screwed,” Marty Erlichman said. “Columbia never told us of the other versions.”
Again, these early singles from Barbra were musically arranged by different people than her first few albums in which Peter Matz did the orchestrations.
Probably because of the other versions, Barbra did not include “My Coloring Book” on her first album; it appeared in 1963 on
The Second Barbra Streisand Album.
To date, these early singles have never been officially released outside of the original vinyl discs from 1962.
