Columbia Records released two songs from Barbra Streisand's big-budget upcoming movie,
Hello, Dolly! (That soundtrack was released by 20th Century Fox Records).
Arranged and conducted by Peter Matz and produced by Wally Gold, “Before the Parade Passes By” is a completely different recording than the version which appears on the
Hello, Dolly! soundtrack album. Matz has fleshed out his arrangement of the song, which Streisand first sang in concert at the International Hotel in Las Vegas during a medley of
Hello, Dolly! songs.
On the flip side of the single is Barbra's ballad from the movie, “Love is Only Love.” This track was not rerecorded by Streisand and Matz at Columbia Records, but, rather, is the same track from the Fox soundtrack album (some legal deal must have been made for Columbia to release a Fox track).
Incidentally, “Love is Only Love” is the same music as “Gotta Be A Dream” which was written for a 1961 Jerry Herman musical, Madame Aphrodite (which ran for 13 performances). The song was then rewritten as “Love is Only Love” for Herman's 1966 hit musical,
Mame— but it was cut from the show. Herman then interpolated the song into the
Hello, Dolly! movie for Streisand.
This Columbia single did not chart.
