The album featured Marvin Hamlisch's musical score for the film. Streisand's vocals appeared on two tracks. Streisand also released a studio album titled
The Way We Were
at the same time. Her album featured the pop version of the theme song, plus other Tin Pan Alley and pop songs. The film’s producer, Ray Stark, threatened to sue because Streisand's studio album was stealing sales from his Rastar Productions soundtrack album. Therefore, Streisand's studio album was required to remove the title “The Way We Were,” and replace it with stickers that claimed: “
Barbra Streisand — Featuring The Hit Single The Way We Were And All In Love Is Fair.”
The Way We Were (Original Soundtrack Recording)
was restored and remastered on CD for the first time in October 1993 and part of Columbia Records' 11 Essential Barbra Streisand Releases. The master tapes were prepared for release by John Arrias (who put together the masters for Just For The Record).
According to Columbia's publicity:
“The objective with each album was to restore the tapes to the quality of the original master recording. To do this in some cases, 30 years of noise had to be eliminated. John used his proprietary C.A.P. Noise Reduction System to eliminate hiss, distortion and noise. In each case great care was taken to maintain the integrity of the original albums.”
The original album art was replicated for the CD, although rearranged a bit. (Which is understandable, as a CD is much smaller than a 12-inch LP).
