Streisand joked with the audience – “I used to be a director and now I've become a backyard singer, did you notice? I sing in backyards.”
The audience included Geena Davis, Warren Beatty, Annette Benning, Rhea Perlman, Dustin Hoffman, Elaine May and Mike Nichols and more.
“The last time I sang live was six years ago to help elect a Democratic senate. What motivated me then was the disaster at Chernoble. And what motivates me now is another kind of disaster: the possibility of four more years of George Bush and Dan Quayle. But I'm hoping that after November 3rd, we can look forward to an atmosphere of change, of growth, of tolerance and compassion.”
Barbra also told the audience that night: "I'm proud to be a liberal, feminist, American artist."
Then she sang “God Bless America” (which was released in 2001 as a bonus single with her album Christmas Memories).
At the end of the show, the Clintons and Gores joined the celebrities on stage for a rousing repeat of “God Bless America,” with Streisand singing loudly.
